Born in New Iberia, Louisiana in March of 1944, George Rodrigue has become an internationally recognizable artist known for his abstract paintings of Cajun country and the infamous "Blue Dog" series. Rodrigue attended St. Peter's College (which is now named Catholic High School), then formally studied art at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette), and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Although he worked mostly in New Orleans, after Katrina, Rodrigue was forced to relocate his studio to Lafayette, Louisiana, where he worked on several relief efforts focused on rebuilding the city's cultural and physical landscape. He raised over 2.7 million dollars for the American Red Cross following Hurricane Katrina, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Rodrigue won countless awards and honors over his lifetime. He passed away in December of 2013 from cancer in Houston, Texas. |
