Born in 1946 in Lake Arthur, Louisiana, Pauline Willis was a self-taught artist. She was the oldest of nine children. She made her first oil painting in 1957 while visiting her aunt and uncle. In 1965, just after completing high school, Pauline married J. E. Willis. They had five children together. Following the death of her ten-year-old eldest child in 1977, which affected her profoundly, birth became a reacurring them in her work. Although Willis studied at the Commercial School of Art in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, she considered her work outsider art. Mrs. Willis passed away in 2006 in Kingsville, Texas. |
