Notes |
George Williams was born in 1911. His exact place of birth is unclear because accounts of his life vary and research is ongoing. According to what records can be found, he left home at the age of 14 and traveled from town to town doing a variety of work, including logging, road building, and working on the railroad. He began carving small heads while working the late shift at a lumberyard. It was there that he began wearing his carved talismen around his neck. His first commissioned work as a woodcarver was making cedar gate posts adorned with carved head. He lived in New Orleans for a large portion of his life, making wooden figures, often couples, either clothed or nude. His work soon attracted the attention of folk art collectors around the world and is now in numerous public and private collections. He passed away in 1997. |
