Brad Widness is a printmaker utilizing etching, collagraph, relief, direct-drawing and mixed-media processes on plates. He incorporates the forms and spatial realities of the objects, light, and landscapes around him into his compositions. Widness is inspired by the prints and drawings of Rembrandt, Goya, Kathe Kollwitz, Lyonel Feinenger, Paul Klee, Stanley W. Hayter, Giorgio Morandi, Gabor Peterdi, Rudy Pazzotti, Richard Diebenkorn, Edward Hopper, Terry Winters, Jim Dine, David Driesbach, and Carl Grupp. Born in St. Paul, MN, Widness grew up in Sioux Falls, SD. He received a BA in Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking from Augustana College, and an MFA in Drawing and Printmaking from Northern Illinois University. Widness has taught drawing, printmaking, watercolor, design, and digital media at Minnesota State University, and currently lives in Mankato, MN. He has also taught courses and workshops in drawing and the book arts at Gustavus Adolphus College and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Widness's work has been included in the Bradley Invitational Print & Drawing Exhibits, North American Print Biennials, Artlink National Juried Exhibits, juried 'New Print' exhibits at the IPCNY, MAPC Invitational Exhibits, and Highpoint Center for Printmaking. His work has been included in portfolios from Frogman's Printmaking and Marais Press, among others. Widness was a recipient of a McKnight Fellowship for new explorations in the book arts. His work resides in the collections of the Hilliard Art Museum, the Purdue Print Archive of Rueff Gallery, Frogman's Printmaking and Paper Workshops, Bob Thimmesh Fine Arts, and the Arca Artium Collection in the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library at St. John's University.
