Beth Van Hoesen was born in Boise, Idaho in 1926. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in 1948. She continued her education in France at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Fontainbleau in 1948, and at the Academie Julian and Academie de la Grand Chaumiere in Paris from 1948 to 1950. Moving back to California in 1951, she enrolled in the California School of Fine Art, now the San Franscisco Art Institute. There she met fellow artist/designer Mark Adams. They married in 1953. In 1955, the couple traveled together to France for an apprenticeship Adams received with tapestry artist Jean Lurçat. In 1959 the couple were back in California where they purchased a 1910 firehouse in San Francisco. The firehouse would be their home and studio for the next 46 years. There the couple hosted weekly portrait and figure drawing classes for many years. In 1981 Van Hoesen received the Award of Honor in Graphics from the San Francisco Arts Commission and in 1993, the Distinguished Artist Award from the California Society of Printmakers. Beth Van Hoesen passed away in 2010. |
