Notes |
Jimmy Sudduth, born on March 10, 1910, in Caines Ridge, Alabama, was a self-taught artist whose artistic journey began in early childhood. He garnered acclaim for his exceptional skill in utilizing homemade paint, which he ingeniously concocted by blending mud with various common substances such as soot, axle grease, sugar, and coffee grounds, resulting in captivating colors and textures. Employing his fingers as tools, Sudduth applied these unique materials directly onto boards or scrap metal. His art predominantly portrayed scenes from everyday life in Alabama, encompassing houses, individuals, farm animals, and his loyal companion, Toto, the dog. Although Sudduth's work was initially exhibited in the late 1960s, it experienced a surge in popularity during the folk art resurgence of the 1980s. He persistently pursued his passion for painting until six months prior to his passing in September 2007. |
