Elemore Madison Morgan was born on October 22, 1903 in Baton Rouge, Louisana to Canadian immigrants and lived on a rural farm outside of Baton Rouge. He attended Louisiana State University for architectural drafting, and later married Dorothy Golden. Their son, Elemore Morgan Jr., eventually became a well-known Louisiana painter as well. In the early 1940s Morgan began working for clients to photograph aspects of life in Cajun country, such as dance halls, fairs, baptisms, and cotton picking. In 1951 he joined the Louisiana Forestry Association as a photographer and traveled to north and central Louisiana to photograph the timber industry. He worked as a commercial photographer until his death on April 10, 1966. Morgan's photographs are held in several collections such as the Historic New Orleans Collection, Louisiana State University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the Lafayette Natural History Museum. In 2006, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art mounted an exhibition of his photographs along with photographs and paintings by his son, Elemore Morgan Jr. |
