Notes |
Eddie Moore was born in East Texas in 1913. An early attraction to cemetery art led him to move to Dallas in the 1940s to pursue his studies, but he was prevented by segregation from doing so. Although his interest in art never waned, he moved to California and became a police officer. At the age of 35 he began carving wooden sculptures with chisels and knives and used found objects to create his sculptures. Moore usually gave his work away to friends and family. It was while he was at a church function that he met Rev. J.L. Hunter, himself a folk artist, who was enthusiastic about Moore's work and offered him assistance in making it a full-time career. Hunter introduced him to folk art collectors who were quick to appreciate the work, allowing Moore to focus on his art. While continuing his burgeoning career as an artist, he became a Deacon of his Baptist Church and adopted the moniker Deacon Eddie Moore. |
