A.J. Meek was born in Beatrice, Nebraska. He had a brief career in the U.S. Air Force, during which he took up photography. He enrolled in the BFA program at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles where he graduated with honors. He later earned his MFA from Ohio University in 1972. In 1977, Meek came to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he founded the photography program, becoming the senior professor in the department. He is best known for his silver gelatin contact prints made with an 8x20 banquet camera. Landscapes featuring Louisiana and the American West figured prominently in his practice. He retired from teaching in 2005 as Professor Emeritus. |
