Harriet Joor was born in Harrisburg, Texas on January 20, 1875. She came to New Orleans, Lousiana at a young age when her father accepted a job at Tulane University as a physician and botanist. Joor and her siblings were able to attend Newcomb High School and College. Joor was one of nine students to studied pottery with teacher Mary Given Sheerer. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1895. Soon after receiving her degree, she enrolled as a Special Art Student from 1896-1900 and studied Graduate Art at Newcomb College from 1900-1901. In the summer of 1900, Joor was awarded a $125 scholarship to attend Arthur Wesley Dow's summer art institute in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Her work that summer won her a bronze medal at an international exhibit in Paris. Joor exhibited three pieces of pottery at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition in St. Louis, Missouri. Also in 1904, she won the Neill medal for proficiency in watercolor painting. Joor taught pottery at the University of Chicago and took a position as a staff writer at the Craftsman in 1906. She homesteaded in Ada, South Dakota from 1911-1912, an expience which greatly influenced her writing. In 1923, Joor took a position at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) teaching art. She remained at the university until 1940. Joor was known for her watercolor paintings, pottery, and embroidery. Joor passed away in March 1965, in Lafayette, Louisiana. |
