Morris Henry Hobbs was born on January 1, 1892, in Rockford, Illinois. He studied drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago and later began studying architecture. In 1921, after his return from serving overseas with the American Expeditionary Force, Hobbs moved to Toledo, Ohio to practice architecture. He traveled throughout Europe, including England, Belgium and France, to draw, paint, and study etching. Early in his career he had the distinction of having two solo exhibitions of his works at the Smithsonian Institution. In 1938, Hobbs traveled to New Orleans with plans to create a series of small prints of the city's many historic buildings and of the French Quarter. Hobbs remained in New Orleans for the rest of his life and went on to form the Society of Louisiana Etchers. Hobbs died in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 24, 1967. |
