Notes |
Phillip Gould was born in 1951 in Greenville, Massachusetts but was raised in San Francisco, California. He graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in photojournalism, and at the age of 23 he moved to New Iberia, Louisiana to become the photographer for The Daily Iberian newspaper there. He fell in love with the culture of southern Louisiana and after brief travels throughout Europe and Mexico he returned to Louisiana and moved to Lafayette. Gould's typical subjects are those of cultural significance, such as Mardi Gras and folk life activities, sometimes staging his subjects or more often than not making use of digital tools to crop and adjust his images as he saw them at the time of capture. In 1996, Gould won the Louisiana Governor's Award for Best Artist. He has published his work in books such as Les Acadiens D'Asteur (1991), Louisiana: A Land Apart (1991), Cajun Music and Zydeco (1992), Louisiana's Capitols: The Power and the Beauty (1995), The Louisiana Houses of A. Hays Town (1999), Louisiana Faces: Images from a Renaissance (2000), Natchitoches and Louisiana's Timeless Cane River (2002), and Acadiana: Louisiana's Historic Cajun Country (2011), and was the first recipient of the Michael P. Smith Award for Documentary Photography in 2009. |
