Sue Coe works via drawing, wood carving, and linoleum printmaking. Her typical subject matter includes animal rights, human rights, and anti-capitalism. She pulls inspiration from nature and the works of Goya, Kollwitz, and Hogarth. Coe trained at the Royal College of Art in London and also by learning to draw for newspapers and magazines overnight. Born in England, Coe then moved to New York City, and has since been living in upstate New York working as an illustrator, visiting artist, and visiting printmaker in various locations. Coe has been awarded the prestigious Dickinson College Arts Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women's Caucus for Art, as well as a Lifetime Achievement in Printmaking Award from The Southern Graphics Council. Coe's solo exhibition at MoMA PS1, "Sue Coe: Graphic Resistance," received rave reviews. Her work resides in the collections of The Broad Art Foundation, Tweed Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Hirshhorn Museum. |
