Yeon Choi is a painter and animator, and her work spans disciplines, ranging from animation and digital prints to painting, drawing, and sculpture. Her works deal with stories and images of women's objects intermingled with natural imagery of fruits, plants, insects, worms, and fish, representing feminine identity and her personal stories and memories. Although she works with visual imagery, her main artistic influences come from literature and fairytales. Her recent works are inspired by Korean folk paintings called Minhwa. Choi's artistic training began in painting. She received a BFA and an MA in Painting at Ewha University in Seoul, and an MFA in Computer Arts at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She was born in Seoul, South Korea and she currently lives in Louisiana, teaching computer arts and animation at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Choi's work has been exhibited in South Korea and the U.S. and her animations have been screened at film festivals both nationally and internationally. She is also a recipient of the Louisiana Artist Fellowship. Her work currently resides in the collections of the Abercrombie Gallery at McNeese State University and Jackson Hall Gallery at Kentucky State University. |
