Notes |
Georgia Blizzard was born May 17, 1919, in Saltville, Virginia to an Irish-American mother and Apache father. As a child, she learned Native American clay firing techniques from her father and made clay toys with her sisters throughout her childhood. She continued to create clay figures and vessels into adulthood, letting her candid approach to life and respect for religion as well as nature affect her artistic vision. Blizzard attended public school until the eighth grade. However, during the Depression, she left school to serve in the National Youth Administration. She worked in a munitions factory during World War II, and then in a textile mill until its closing in the 1960s. Blizzard married at twenty-one having one daughter named Mary. She passed away in June of 2002. |
