Andrew Blanchard utilizes a variety of screen print techniques in layers on wood panel, incorporating digital imagery and spray paint. Blanchard's work is in conversation with the American South, referencing both Southern literature and his personal experience. Most of his influences are literary, including the works of Barry Hannah, Jesmyn Ward, Lewis Nordan, and Eugene Walter. Among his visual inspirations are the work of Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Bradford's decollage, Sally Mann's early photography, the sculptures of Mike Ballard, and his aunt, Maureen Blanchard. Blanchard holds an MFA in Printmaking from Ole Miss (The University of Mississippi) and a BA in Studio Art from the University of Southern Mississippi. He also studied lithography with the master printer Frederic Possot in Paris, France. Born in Slidell, LA, Blanchard was raised along the Gulf Coast in Waveland, MS. He currently resides in Spartanburg, SC, where he is an Associate Professor of Studio Art at Converse University. His work was recently featured in the Red Clay Survey of Contemporary Southern Art at the Huntsville Museum of Art and has been featured in magazines and books such as Printmakers Today, Oxford American, and New American Paintings. His work is in the permanent collections at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Mississippi Museum of Art. He is represented by Southside Gallery, Levee Contemporary, and Fischer Gallery. |
