Notes |
Joseph Almyda, a printmaker, was born in Florida in 1926. He studied at Florida State University and the Chicago Art Institute before joining the art faculty of Georgia State University in 1955. Almyda, along with Genevieve Arnold and Joe Perrin, who were also faculty at the university, worked closely with the Atlanta arts community to support the burgeoning contemporary art scene. In 1965, Almyda left Georgia State to concentrate on his work full-time. He traveled to Florida, Texas, and New Mexico and his works were shown at the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Fine Arts, the Dallas Museum of Fine Art, and the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe. He was an artist in residence at the Tamarind Institute and at the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. Almyda's residencies in New Mexico had a lasting effect on his work, and he began to draw more inspiration for individual works from desert and natural landscapes. His later works showcase Almyda's move from his earlier figurative prints to painted abstract works. He passed away in 2011 in Altanta, Georgia. |
