Michael Aakhus is a painter and printmaker who works in oils, intaglio printmaking, and digital prints. Aakhus takes inspiration from subjects as various as native market scenes to mythology. His work is influenced by his travels, as well as art history within a magical realist narrative context. Aakhus holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Bemidji State University and an MFA from Southern Illinois University. He currently holds the rank of Professor of Art and Dean Emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Southern Indiana. Born in Effie, MN, he currently moves seasonally between Roswell, NM and Beaver Springs, PA. His work is held in the collections of the Minnesota Museum of Art, Tec de Monterrey, University of Essex, Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, Roswell Museum and Art Center, Owensboro Museum, and the Evansville Museum of Art and Science. |
